Position: Befriender for Isolated Older People
Volunteer Role
About the role
We're looking to recruit volunteer befrienders for its Ageing and Wellbeing Service to volunteer in Central and East Bristol.
Wellspring is based in a vibrant and lively area of the city with many activities on offer, but it is also an area where there are many very isolated and lonely older-people. As a befriender you will visit our clients in their home for a chat and to get to know them. It may be that you encourage and support them to join in with activities in the area, or even provide a ride to the activity. Wellspring will provide you with support and a mentor, along with relevant training.
We will match you with an older person as all clients will be known to us. You will be part of the team at Wellspring, invited to team meetings and wider community events.
We will reimburse you any out-of-pocket expenses.
What are we looking for?
Understanding and kindness - sometimes people just want to be heard and to know that someone is bothered enough to listen.
Patience - some older people need gentle encouragement over a long period of time to gain trust and be able to think about doing things differently, such as trying a new activity.
Practical considerations
Expenses for bus fares car and bike mileage will be reimbursed.
Induction and on-the-job training is provided.
Volunteers will receive ongoing support and guidance, including mentoring and supervision.
Volunteers will be asked to commit to two hours a month.
